1868 Studebaker Coal Wagon

In the 1850s, three brothers worked in their father’s wagon business. They went out west during the California Gold Rush and made wheelbarrows for the miners.

After that, they came back east and in 1868 started the Studebaker Wagon Company. By 1875, they were the worlds largest wagon and coach manufacturers.

One of these horse drawn pieces was a coal truck with hand-cranked elevating gears and sprockets. In the 1900s, they moved into electric cars and then to gasoline.

This replica features handmade concave spokes, a 6″ dish, and a working coal shoot. The elevating bed is cranked by hand and delivers the coal into a customer’s basement.
